Cupping

Cupping is a technique common in traditional medicine that uses suction to dramatically increase blood flow to superficial muscle layers. This enables the lymphatic system to better process metabolic waste, clears the blood vessels, and stretches and activates the skin. While massage uses downward pressure to break up muscular adhesions, cupping accomplishes this by drawing the skin upward by creating a vacuum to clear "knots" and relieve muscle tension. As our muscles become tight and knotted over time, the blood flow and lymphatic drainage is impaired resulting in stagnation. It is common to see pink, red, or purple marks in the area where the cup has been positioned. This discoloration typically becomes less dramatic each time cupping is performed as the blood flow and muscular health improves with treatment.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is another manual technique used in Chinese Medicine. It involves the scraping of the muscles with a smooth edged tool like a ceramic spoon to loosen the fascia and chronically tight areas. This modality increases blood flow to the area by 400% and has immune and anti-inflammatory effects. In our office, we commonly use gua sha on the neck, shoulders, and upper back in the treatment of neck pain and migraine headache. The reduction in pain after treatment can be quite profound. Similar to cupping, redness at the site of therapy is to be expected and usually dissipates within several days.

Before Your Visit

We recommend drinking plenty of water after both cupping and gua sha to assist in the removal of metabolic waste and promote muscle hydration. It is advised to avoid strenuous physical activity and best to rest following treatment.
